Assessment and Autism Diagnosis

If parents suspect their child may need an Autism diagnosis, experts generally recommend at least the following:

  • Appointment with child’s pediatrician, to discuss parent concerns and obtain referrals if needed.
  • Hearing evaluation, if this has not been done and child shows signs of potential hearing challenges.
  • Speech and language evaluation, if this has not been done. Each state has free resources for this evaluation. For children under age 3, parents can contact the state’s Program for Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities. For children ages 3 and older, parents can contact the school district Assessment Center. The pediatrician and schools should have these phone numbers.
  • Assessment for an Autism Spectrum Disorder, to determine whether the child has this diagnosis. Normally this is performed by a Psychiatrist, a Psychologist, or a Developmental Pediatrician. Social Workers are also able to assess children for Autism, although some states require another health professional's diagnosis to access certain services.
  • Any other Assessments the child's physician and healthcare team may recommend based on the child's health history, family history, and symptoms. These may include certain medical testing, genetic testing, or similar asssessments to learn more about the child's condition and potential treatment options.

    Remember, The Earlier the Better

Many parents have found that they need to be insistent and perhaps offer to take a cancellation slot in order to get their child in as quickly as possible.

It's important not to wait! In general, the younger a child is when he or she receives appropriate help, the more effective that help may be. For example, interventions given at age 2 may have significantly more potential to help some children than at age 5. But regardless of the child’s age, acting quickly can be very important.
